Whoa, okay, so a TON of you guys have been blowing up my comments, telling me I HAVE to watch this movie called The Goonies. I finally did it, and dudes... you guys were right! It’s seriously awesome! I know, it’s kinda old – like, way before I was even born – and at first I was like, "Alright, we'll see," but it's got this totally cool vibe that reminds me of the good parts of being a kid. You guys have the best taste, because this movie totally sucked me in!
Okay, so the basic setup is this: these kids, they call themselves the Goonies, live in this town called Astoria up in Oregon – which is like, right here in our backyard, how cool is that?! Their neighborhood, called the Goon Docks, is about to get bulldozed so they can build this lame golf course or something. Super bummer, right? Don't we already have enough of those?
But then, this kid Mikey finds this old treasure map in their attic! It belonged to this pirate from like, way back in the day, One-Eyed Willy. And the legend is that he hid all this treasure. So, the Goonies are all, “Forget the golf course, we’re finding that loot and saving our homes!” And that’s when the adventure REALLY kicks off! It’s all about friendship and going on this crazy quest. It’s got that same adventurous feel as when Indy’s looking for treasure, but with a bunch of kids instead of a grown-up with a whip.
The Goonies are this awesome group of friends, each with their own thing going on:
There’s Mikey Walsh, played by Sean Astin. He’s like the leader, super determined and believes in the treasure no matter what. He reminds me of Luke Skywalker, always hoping for something bigger.
Then you got Brandon Walsh, played by Josh Brolin. He’s Mikey’s older brother, kind of the responsible one, but he gets into the adventure too.
Data, played by Jonathan Ke Quan. This dude is a total genius inventor! He’s always got some crazy gadget, like oil slick shoes and a spring-loaded boxing glove! He’s like the Q of the Goonies!
Chunk, played by Jeff Cohen. Okay, Chunk is hilarious! He’s the big, lovable guy who’s always hungry and getting into trouble, but he’s got a good heart. He’s kind of like the Han Solo of the group, always making funny comments.
Mouth, played by Corey Feldman. This guy is the smooth talker of the group, fluent in Spanish (sort of!). He’s always got a wisecrack ready.
And Stephanie, played by Martha Plimpton, and Andy, played by Kerri Green, are Brandon’s girlfriend and her friend, who end up getting dragged into the adventure too. They’re pretty cool and definitely hold their own!
Seriously, this group of kids is the best! They bicker and tease each other, but you can tell they’d do anything for each other. It’s like the squad goals of the 80s!
So, I looked up some stuff about how they made this movie, and it’s pretty wild!
It was directed by Richard Donner, who also did the first Superman movie! That’s pretty legit.
The story was actually thought up by Steven Spielberg! The same dude who was behind Indiana Jones! No wonder it felt like a big adventure! It’s like he sprinkled some of that magic dust on it.
They actually built a lot of the sets for real! Like, the pirate ship that they find? That wasn’t CGI, they built a whole freaking ship inside a studio! That’s insane! It makes the movie feel so much more real.
Apparently, the first time the kids saw the pirate ship, their reactions were totally real because the director wanted to capture their genuine surprise. That’s a cool way to make a scene feel authentic.
The actor who played Chunk, Jeff Cohen, actually had the chickenpox when he showed up to film, but he didn't tell anyone because he was afraid they'd replace him! That's dedication!
It sounds like they put a lot of heart and real effort into making this movie, and it totally shows.
Okay, so why should you watch this movie even though it’s old enough to be your parents’ favorite? Here’s the lowdown:
The Adventure is Insane! It’s non-stop! They go through secret tunnels, booby traps, and all this crazy stuff trying to find the treasure. It’s like a real-life video game!
Friendship Goals! The bond between the Goonies is what makes the movie so awesome. They stick together no matter how scary or weird things get. It makes you wanna have a crew like that.
It’s Funny! Chunk is hilarious, Mouth has all the zingers, and Data’s gadgets always backfire in funny ways. There are so many laugh-out-loud moments.
It’s Actually Kinda Scary! There are these bad guys, the Fratellis, who are chasing the Goonies, and they’re genuinely creepy! It adds this cool layer of suspense to the adventure, kind of like when Darth Vader shows up.
It’s Got That Classic 80s Vibe! The music, the clothes, the way they talk – it’s all super nostalgic in a cool way. It’s like stepping into a time machine.
It Makes You Feel Like Anything is Possible! Watching these kids go on this incredible adventure makes you think that maybe, just maybe, you could find hidden treasure in your own attic!
Seriously, The Goonies is a blast! It’s got action, it’s funny, it’s got heart, and it’s about the power of friendship. Even though it came out way before my time, it’s definitely earned a spot on my list of favorite movies. You should totally check it out! "Goonies never say die!" It's a pretty catchy line!
